abstract = "In this paper, we evaluate the Cerrado biome deforestation rates
for the 2003 2007 period, considering regional watersheds
(Ottobacias de n{\'{\i}}vel 3), the PROBIO remnant vegetation
map, and change assessments based on MOD13Q1 NDVI (normalized
difference vegetation index) imagery. Specifically, four time
frames were taken into account: 2003 2004, 2004 2005, 2005 2006,
and 2006 2007. Interestingly, these four periods are grouped into
two major categories, with significant differences regarding the
number of watersheds, the total converted area and the amplitude
of the rates. For the overall period of 2003 2007, the
deforestation rate varied from 0,03% to 9,78%, with a mean value
of 1.59%. Large values are predominantly found in the watersheds
located in two hydrographic regions, while hydrographic regions
mostly situated in the southern portion of the biome show the
lowest rates. Although it is possible to devise consistent spatial
and temporal patterns, our results also suggest that any attempt
to model future scenarios for the Cerrado biome based on these
highly variable deforestation rates may induce in major mistakes.
